Sweet Voice of the Holy Spirit

God is in the business of revealing Himself to His people. When we open the pages of scripture, we can see specific examples of times when God has shown His plan and His heart. In the Old Testament, God spoke in powerful ways, such as angels (Dan 8:15), burning bush (Ex. 3:4), clouds ( Ex. 13:21), dreams and visions (Num 12:6), and fire (Deut. 5:25), to name a few. He spoke with authority and undeniable power.

God changed things in the New Testament when Jesus entered the story. He spoke to His people through the person of Jesus. We read in Hebrews 1:1-4 “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,  but in these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,  having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.”

God sent Jesus to communicate to us in even more intimate ways. He walked on this earth, experienced flesh and ultimately died the death we deserve.  When Jesus ascended into heaven after his resurrection, he told his followers that He would leave us a helper, the Holy Spirit ( John 15:26).

As followers and lovers of Jesus, we have the divine privilege of having the spirit of God living inside of us. We have personal, direct access to the living God.

God can speak to us in our spirit in deep and personal ways; however, sometimes they are subtle, not sensational, and may seem mundane. But let us not discount the miraculous access we have to the Holy Spirit, and let us not overlook the small things.

With all this being said, it can be challenging to differentiate God’s word against our flesh and our world. Emotions and culture can scream, and most often, God’s words are delicate, sweet, whispers in our hearts. Are we attuned to hear the Lord despite all the noise around us? Can we weed out the lies to get to the root of the truth?

We are called to be a living sacrifice, and God calls us to be transformed by renewing our minds so that we can know His voice, we can know His will, and we can understand what is good. ( Romans 12:1-2)

So, how can we position ourselves to hear the sweet voice of the living God? How can we push out everything that tangles our minds and spoils our hearing? We aim to seek God above all else. When we don’t know which way to go, we seek God. When we are consumed with confusion, we seek God. We take what we hear and align it with the truth of who God is giving it clarity.

When I find myself in a place where I have to make a decision, but I don’t know which way to go, I surrender that decision and spend time in God’s word, not only seeking answers and direction but seeking God himself, the untruths begin to fall to the wayside, giving me clear eyes to see God’s path for me. It isn’t easy. The world is loud, my thoughts are loud, but God is more audible when we position ourselves to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit.

When we spend time seeking God, it fundamentally changes who we are, at the root, not just on the exterior of our lives. When this happens, we can hear God’s voice more clearly, and the Holy Spirit can get busy doing the miraculous work that He wants to do in our lives.

Even if clarity doesn’t come immediately, seeking the Lord is well worth it. It is the right direction, and you will start to see your desires change to only things of God. Take heart. God wants to speak to you, so do not grow weary in doing good. (2 Thess 3:13)

Testimonials

  • Taylor Phillips, author of Training Ground

United House Publishing was 100% an answer to prayer. I knew that God called me to write books, but I wasn't in a good position to publish according to certain industry expectations. I continued to be faithful, knowing God would make a way. AND HE DID. United House is such a champion for the underdog—for the one who doesn't have a huge platform but wants to be obedient to God. I was so blessed by the process from start to finish. From the heart and help of the revision team, to editing, coaching, and everything in between. United House was, and is, an incredible company to be part of!

United House Publishing is absolutely GREAT to work!  I previously published a book alone... and it was so hard.  But UHP gives support like no other!  When they say they are praying over you and your work, you KNOW it!  The author coaches I have worked with have been awesome.  Not only do they help you set and crush your writing goals, they also help you pursue wellness in all aspects of your life, and you can't put a price tag on that!

  • Wendy Perry, author of The Battle Within

God gave me the words to write a book and then He sent me to the perfect place to publish it—United House Publishing! The thought of editing and publishing a book was new and overwhelming. However, through God's peace and directing me to UHP the whole process was made easier. I felt "safe" and "at ease" sharing the story God gave me to UHP, because they treated me and my manuscript with respect. I'm thankful I obeyed God and worked with UHP to publish my very first book.

  • Gina Rodriguez, author of Teacher Tired

As a person who has NEVER considered herself a writer, it is no shock I was in need of help when I felt led to publish my first book.  I am so blessed that I was referred to UHP.  I started my writing journey so afraid of the process, not sure where to start or what to expect. It was such a huge relief to have a team of authentic writers, editors, mentor me along the way as I pushed back fears of intimidation that tried to stop me.  With UHP I found my writing voice. The monthly coaching calls were especially important to keep me going when idleness or doubt crept in (because it will).  Having UHP to pray with me, refine my writing skills and keep me accountable made all the difference between beginning to write a book to actually finishing it!
